Matej Blecha 1913-1916

A dominant corner of Wenceslas Square consisting of three large houses with rich facades combining strong horizontal and vertical elements topped with an exquisitely detailed copper-covered roof with inserted shaped windows. This building was built by Matej Blecha, but it is possible that Emil Kralicek was also involved as the designer. The corner is crowned by an extraordinary sculptural hat appearing like the head of a robot (a word, incidentally, invented and used by the Czech writer Karel Capek in his play Rossum's Universal Robots, 1920). Decorative flower and lion motifs and a row of warrior heads with copper helmets line the facades.
