Pavel Janak 1931-1933

Two buildings are placed together, an apartment building adjacent to an evangelical church with a stand-alone tall square tower. For part of its height the tower encloses a spiral staircase and is topped with a copper chalice, a symbol of Czech Protestant religion. The staircase has been used as a dynamic element providing additional vertical direction to the tower, like a giant corkscrew. Render finish is applied to the apartments and the church, and is further enhanced by rough-hewn stone slabs in parts enclosing the ground level. Surprisingly, one slab sticks out of the plane of the church facade near the foot of the tower.
