At the beginning of this century, at the height of the Secession period, architects, painters and sculptors worked together to create richly decorated buildings with paintings, mosaics and sculptures in a common style. It was followed, under the influence of Dutch and American architecture, by a more sober, Modernist approach to architecture, adopted in Bohemia by Jan Kotera and Otakar Novotny.
