Architect and author, studied at the Institute of Decorative Arts under Professor Jan Kotera and later worked in Kotera's studio. A member of Manes and a professor at the Institute of Decorative Arts. Initially Novotny was influenced by Hendrik P. Berlage, later becoming an important representative of Czech rational Modernism, Cubism and Functionalism. Novotny published 'Jan Kotera a jeho doba' in 1958.
