Architect, painter and teacher, a founder of Czech modern architecture. He graduated from the German Industrial Arts School in Plzen and the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Otto Wagner. Received the Rome Scholarship Prize in 1897, and was a member of Manes. His architecture was influenced by trips abroad to the USA, Holland and Great Britain. A professor at the Institute of Decorative Arts and Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and a highly influential teacher of the next generation of Czech architects.
